This is because, in bar , foo is resolved prior to template instantiation, so the value for I isn’t known (thus, both enable_if conditions for foo fail). However, in baz , foo is resolved during template instantiation, so the value for T::number is known.

The external_source_symbol attribute specifies that a declaration originates from an external source and describes the nature of that source.

The fact that Clang is capable of recognizing declarations that were defined externally can be used to provide better tooling support for mixed-language projects or projects that rely on auto-generated code. For instance, an IDE that uses Clang and that supports mixed-language projects can use this attribute to provide a correct ‘jump-to-definition’ feature. For a concrete example, consider a protocol that’s defined in a Swift file:

This protocol can be used from Objective-C code by including a header file that was generated by the Swift compiler. The declarations in that header can use the external_source_symbol attribute to make Clang aware of the fact that SwiftProtocol actually originates from a Swift module:

Consequently, when ‘jump-to-definition’ is performed at a location that references SwiftProtocol , the IDE can jump to the original definition in the Swift source file rather than jumping to the Objective-C declaration in the auto-generated header file.

The external_source_symbol attribute is a comma-separated list that includes clauses that describe the origin and the nature of the particular declaration. Those clauses can be:

The clauses can be specified in any order. The clauses that are listed above are all optional, but the attribute has to have at least one clause.

The attribute causes calls within the attributed function to be inlined unless it is impossible to do so, for example if the body of the callee is unavailable or if the callee has the attribute.

Use this attribute to force stack alignment.

Legacy x86 code uses 4-byte stack alignment. Newer aligned SSE instructions (like ‘movaps’) that work with the stack require operands to be 16-byte aligned. This attribute realigns the stack in the function prologue to make sure the stack can be used with SSE instructions.

Note that the x86_64 ABI forces 16-byte stack alignment at the call site. Because of this, ‘force_align_arg_pointer’ is not needed on x86_64, except in rare cases where the caller does not align the stack properly (e.g. flow jumps from i386 arch code).

Throughout the article we clearly state that these research findings are for checkout processes and long account creation forms. Indeed, this is even stated in the article title.

We have not tested things like comment forms, surveys, etc. and the findings will therefore not necessarily translate to those contexts. We have therefore decided to only mark the optional field in our 3-field comment form, but if you look at our checkout process you will find that we do indicate both required and optional fields :)

Thanks as usual. I think this isn’t as black and white as is made out within the article. Let me explain why. Taking the salient insight here of “both optional and required form fields should be indicated” the recommendation is to, simply put, “add one word (‘optional’ or ‘required’) next to each field”.

Did you find any issue or trouble with this? For example, some assumptions I would make on user behaviour here is that users would scan this label as:

a) it’s almost like a disclaimer such as that at the top of your Target example which users dismissed b) it’s another word that users have to read and as Steve Krug says – get rid of half the text on your page then get rid of half again c) when users scan the page, which they will as indicated, this is not just an additional word, but a 3 syllable additional word that could be quite hard to interpret d) maybe this is just a design element in the example you gave – but because optional isn’t a stand out element from required or visa-versa, they look exactly the same and therefore non-differentiating.

Contextually, I think there are still issues. I’m not debating the point at all, just the implemented or recommended solution. Adversely, then again, if you were to place “optional” and an “*” you are almost comparing apples and pears to a word mixed with a symbol that users have to associate to an action.

As Jessica says – it’s controversial.

Hi David, thank you for the comment.

Great, point. But no we did not observe any of those issues to anywhere nearly the same degree as the issue of not marking both field types explicitly. Some answers:

a) there’s a big difference between a universal page disclaimer at the top of the page and one on a field level. By having it for each field users are allowed to focus on one field at a time (as they fill it), with a single universal disclaimer they have to read the page like a book (which they of course don’t). b) agree that general page descriptions should be concise and to the point, something that we found in our checkout studies as well. But removing the information entirely don’t make the checkout any simpler to complete for the user. Following that logic we could also remove the field labels entirely :) http://baymard.com/blog/false-simplicity c) agree that the user’s initial scan of the checkout step might be worse off when both field types are required, but again during all three different large-scale checkout studies, the sites which marked both, proved to provide the user a much more clear form filling experience (allowing them to focus on each field individually). d) agree that this might apply when users were scanning the checkout step as a whole, but we did not observe it as they were filling each field individually.

Effective January 1, 2018, Ontario’s new Employing Young Talent Incentive (EYTI) is being offered to small businesses (fewer than 100 employees) who hire and retain youth 15 to 29 years old through Employment Service, and to all employers hiring through Youth Job Connection.

How it works: As an employer, you benefit from hiring a young person. Through the Employing Young Talent Incentive, you will receive incentives of $1,000 to $2,000 as follows:

For Employment Service (ES)-assisted youth clients matched with a small business (less than 100 employees) between January 1, 2018 and March 31, 2018, the employer will be receive a $1,000 retention payment at three months followed by a $1,000 retention payment at six months.

For ES-assisted youth clients matched with a small business after April 1, 2018, the employer will receive $1,000 upon hiring, followed by an additional $1,000 retention payment at six months in the job.

For the Youth Job Connection (YJC) program, effective January 1, 2018 a retention payment of $1,000 will be payable to employers after 3 months, with a further $1,000 payable to employers after 6 months as an incentive to small and large businesses to retain youth typically left out of the workforce. To be eligible to receive the EYTI benefit for hiring a young person, you must:

More Information

What is the Employment Service program?

Employment Service is one service in the suite of services and programs known as Employment Ontario. It is delivered by a network of third-party service providers. Find your nearest provider.

It provides all job seekers including youth in Ontario with access to all the employment services and supports they need in one location, so they can find and keep a job, apply for training and plan a career that’s right for them.

In 2016-17 there were 69,477 employment services assisted youth clients (29 and under) served through employment services.

What is the Youth Job Connection program?

Youth Job Connection is one service in the suite of services and programs known as Employment Ontario. It is delivered by a network of third-party service providers. Find your nearest provider.

The Youth Job Connection program services youth aged 15 to 29 who are traditionally left out of the workforce by providing more intensive supports beyond job search and placement opportunities. Supports for this program include:

As of March 31, 2017, over 22,000 youth have participated in the Youth Job Connection program since the program launched on October 1, 2015.

MAESD will support these new initiatives by using the existing Employment Ontario delivery network to provide employers with incentives to hire and retain youth. These incentives will be delivered as part of the Employment Service and the Youth Job Connection programs, and will take effect in January 2018. Eligible employers will receive payments starting in the spring of 2018.

Employers will receive a maximum of $2,000 to hire and retain youth (who are not benefiting from a current incentive) as follows:

These payments would be for employers who are not benefiting from a current incentive through ES.

This retention payment would be in addition to existing employer incentives eligible under YJC.

The ministry is officially launching these employer incentives in April 2018, at the start of the ministry’s fiscal year. Since the minimum wage increase takes effect in January 2018, and to support small employers, the ministry is allowing eligible employers who hired youth from January to March to also receive the incentive.

Although employers may be eligible as of January 2018, payments will not be issued until April 2018. Employers who hired youth between January and March and retained them will receive their first payment beginning April (the 3 month incentive).

A small business for the purposes of the incentive delivered under ES is a business with less than 100 employees.

The incentive delivered under YJC is not limited to small businesses.

To be eligible for the incentive under the Employment Service program, the employer must have fewer than 100 employees.

Eligibility for the incentive under the Youth Job Connection program is not based on employer size, so all sizes of employers would be eligible for the incentive regardless of the number of employees.

Youth are defined as any individual between the ages of 15 and 29 years old.

The new ES and YJC guidelines will be shared in January 2018 and the ministry has been training its service providers.

The delivery of ES and YJC will not be affected. The programs’ networks are being utilized as they have the current infrastructure and capacity to deliver this new employer incentive. Service providers will have some additional responsibilities in terms of follow-ups and payments, and will therefore receive 15% of their total incentive budget in incremental administrative funding to support delivery.

Employers will be eligible for these incentives beginning January 1, 2018. Payments will start as of April 2018.

Employers are eligible for various incentives and supports under the Employment Ontario umbrella, including:
